Introduction of Medical Education of Medical School

Shandong University School of Basic Medical Sciences enrolls 400 undergraduates every year, including 200 candidates of Medical Bachelor (5 years) and 200 candidates of Medical Master (7 years).

Medical Bachelor (5-year of Medical Education)

The five years of systemic medical education will provide students with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for medical practice. There are 51 compulsory courses that are classified into three kinds: natural and social sciences, basic medical sciences and clinical medical sciences. Natural and social sciences include Mathematics, Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Cell Biology, English, Morals and Law, Culture and Traditional Literature. These courses teach the students basic knowledge of the nature and the society.

Basic medical sciences consist of the Human Anatomy (including the Systemic Anatomy and Local Anatomy), Histology and Embryology, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology, Human Parasitology, Pathophysiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Medical Psychology, Medical Genetics, Medical Ethics, Preventive Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Science of Operation, Image Medicine, and Diagnosis. These courses provide the students with basic knowledge of structure and function of human body, the causes and development of diseases, the basic techniques for diagnosis and treatment of the diseases.

Clinical medical sciences include the Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology. Besides learning the clinical sciences, the students will do internship in hospital. During the practice as an intern, students will take part in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Students will combine everything they learned in Medical School during the clinical practice.

In addition to the 51 compulsory courses, there are more than 50 selective courses. These courses are designed for students to broaden and deepen their knowledge of the natural and social sciences, basic medical sciences, clinical sciences and techniques. They will also give the students some basics about the medical research. Students shall choose more than 6 of them during the five years of medical education.

50 of the students will specialize in the study of Medical Image during the last two years. Apart from the clinical courses, they will study photography, Medical Imageological Technique, Sectional Anatomy, Imageological Diagnosis, Diagnostic Ultrasonography, Radiation Therapeutics, and Interventional Radiology. If the student passes all compulsory and selected courses, they will get the degree of Medical Bachelor.

Medical Master (7-year of Medical Education)

The three kinds of courses, including the natural and social science, the basic medical science and clinical sciences designed for the candidates of the Medial Master work equally to the candidates of the Medical Bachelor. There are two differences between the education of Medical Bachelor and Medical Master. The first difference is that, in the first year, the candidates of the Medical Master will study in the School of Biological Sciences. They will learn more courses of biological science, which give them a better background for the study of the medical sciences. The second difference is that the student will receive some basic training on medical research. Some courses, including the Statistics, SAS Software, Neurobiology, the Cellular Biology Technique and Molecular biology Technique will give the students some basics about the research. The students will act as intern for two years. They will specialize in one area in the last year, and besides the basic training of the clinical practice, they have to finish their Master Thesis. The oral defense for the thesis will be held before they finish the seven years education. If they pass all the courses and the thesis defense, they will get the degree of Medical Master.

At the end of the medical education, the students, both the Medical Bachelor and Medical Master, will realize that the medical science is a broad, deep, and rapidly changing discipline. The mastery of medical knowledge and technical skills requires lifelong self-education.
