Summer Exchange ProgramsDetails:

1) SDU students -->Institute of Medical School (IMS), University of Toronto

General Description: Institute of Medical School (IMS) of University of Toronto undertakes Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) for international undergraduate students every year. Selected students will conduct 12-week research internship at medical laboratory ofUniversityofToronto. Participants spend the summer in the laboratory of an IMS faculty member, working on research projects ranging across a broad spectrum of the biomedical sciences--from molecular biology and cognitive sciences to clinical investigation and bioethics. Participants are encouraged to participate in individual laboratory meetings, data analysis sessions, journal clubs, and appropriate clinical research rounds at the affiliated teaching hospitals. The IMS offers a formal lecture series to complement the students’ research, consisting of a mixture of research presentations, graduate information sessions and practical skills workshops. In mid-August, students and supervisors participate in an IMS Research Day program and students will be guided to present their work in a poster or oral presentation format. Supervisors will serve as judges of the posters, informal oral presentations and abstract submissions. Upon completion of the entire IMS Summer Research Program, each participant will be given a certificate of completion.

Summer studentships for undergraduate and medical students offer a unique opportunity to experience the excitement and challenge of scientific research, working in the laboratories of some of the world’s top medical scientists. TheIMS has negotiated a formal International Summer Research Program with selected international universities. It is reportedly that 4 students from Shandong University participated in this program in 2010 and 7 students in 2011. SURP officially started in 2012and7 students from SDUwereadmitted to join the programin 2012, 9 students in 2013, and 11 students in 2014.

Student Selection: SURP is open to third year SDU undergraduates and/or above majoring in Clinical Medicine. Each year 7-10 SDU students are selected by SDU through written exams and interview. The application materials include international student application form, agreement by SDU, recent transcript and students have to contact supervisor of University of Toronto in advance.

2) SDU Students -->University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)

General Description: UNMC makes offers to 4 SDU students every year to conduct two-month research internship there since 2010. However, in order to cooperate with CSC’sInternational Exchange Program for Excellent Undergraduatesprogram, the number of students expands to 5 and the internship period expands to 3 months for the same reason, usually from June to the end of August. Selected students will do research at the medical laboratory under the guidance of their supervisors, and participate in laboratory meetings and seminars.

Student Selection: The UNMC program is usually open to third year and/or above SDU students majoring in Clinical Medicine. Students who submit the application have to take written exam (English test) and interview (test of oral English, comprehensive quality and research experience) organized by Shandong University School of Medicine. The final decision is made by UNMC through interviewing the SDU students in the ranked order until the maximum number of research spaces is filled. UNMC will appoint supervisors to students according to their research interests.
